In this blog, you’ll be able to find everything that’s needed to get the most out of volleyball arm swing training.

Training Correct Arm Swing Mechanics

First of all, let’s dive deeper into the mechanics of a good volleyball arm swing. It all begins with the preparation. It’s important to note that an attack in the sport of volleyball is a throwing action. That’s why it’s so important for a volleyball hitter to master the right type of the throwing motion. Bear in mind that throwing mechanics in volleyball are the same as throwing mechanics in bambenton and baseball. Throwing motion is the same in all these sports.

You should take the correct elbow position first. Volleyball player’s elbow should be drawn back. However, some athletes choose to have the elbow of a hitting hand above the shoulder. Make sure that the height of the hitting shoulder is optimal. The non-hitting arm needs to be positioned properly as well. You should feel comfortable to initiate a throwing action. If you get ready for an arm swing this way, then you’ll find it easy to carry out a successful attack hit.

You need to position your upper body correctly. So, you’ll find it easy to initiate the right throwing motion and hit the ball forcefully. Keep in mind that your body has to be rotated during a volleyball arm swing. Elbows have to be rotated too. That’s the reason why a volleyball player should have a slight tilt in the shoulders.

Arms should assist a volleyball hitter in a jumping motion and in a throwing motion. A volleyball hitter’s right hand should be back before an arm swing. A volleyball hitter’s left hand should be up and assist in throwing motion. During an arm swing a volleyball hitter’s left hand will be drawn to the body. You should get your right arm (hitting arm) up first and then let it go through the ball.

Actually, these are just the basics of a correct volleyball arm swing. However, learning the basics of an arm swing is not enough. It’s incredibly important for a volleyball hitter to practise a volleyball arm swing on a regular basis. It’s worth noting that developing an arm swing is something that has to be a key part of a volleyball hitter’s training program. Volleyball Arm Swing Drills

In fact, there are many good drills that allow volleyball hitters to improve their arm swing. If you do these volleyball drills consistently, the success will definitely come to you over time. Below, we’ll provide you with volleyball arm swing drills that a volleyball player need to master regularly.

Hitting against the wall. Doing this type of drill makes it possible for a volleyball player to practise hard spiking and improve his/her arm swing dramatically. It’s important to point out that this volleyball drill is easy to do, so hitters will be able to practise it at home. First of all, a volleyball player has to stand in front of a wall. The distance between an athlete and wall has to be about 10 feet. The player’s task is to hit the ball into the floor. A hitter should spike into the area that’s close to the base of wall. As a result, the ball bounces off the floor and goes towards the wall. After that, the ball bounces off the wall and go to the air. So, a volleyball player will get an opportunity to spike the ball into floor once again. It’s a good way to practise an arm swing in the sport of volleyball.

High bounce drill. It’s another drill that a volleyball player can practise against the wall. It’s widely known that timing is everything when it comes to volleyball hitting. The reality is high bounce drill is a great way to practise timing for hitting. Initially, a volleyball player has to stand in front of the wall. The distance between an athlete and the wall has to be approximately 30 feet. First of all, a volleyball hitter has to throw the ball high in the air. After that, a volleyball hitter has to allow the ball to land nearly 10 feet in front of him/her. Once the ball bounces off the floor a hitter should take advantage of the so called jump spike approach and get to the ball as soon as possible. Next, a volleyball player has to jump high in the air and hit the ball. During an arm swing a hitter has to ensure that his arm is straight. When the ball bounces off the wall, a volleyball hitter has to spike it again.

A soft dink shot drill. Obviously, a volleyball hitter shouldn’t spike the ball the same way all the time. It’s a great idea to diversify the game from time to time. So, it makes a lot of sense for an attacker in volleyball to master different types of hits. It would be nice for a hitter to master a soft dink shot. This drill has to be practiced by a hitter and tosser. Initially, a volleyball hitter has to position himself/herself near the attack line on the court. The drill begins and a tosser has to set the ball to a volleyball hitter. The hitter’s task is to approach to the ball and spike it softly. An attacker in volleyball shouldn’t aim to hit the ball as hard as he/she can. Instead, an attacker has to spike the ball slowly. However, during the arm swing a hitter has to have an open hand and firm fingers. If you would like to make this drill more difficult, it would be better to do it with blockers. In this scenario, a hitter should try to be smarter than blockers and land the ball in the area of the attack line on the opposing side of the court.

Tips for Developing a Faster Arm Swing in Volleyball

A volleyball hitter will be able to generate high amounts of power during arm swing if his/her muscles are relaxed.

– It’s pretty clear that a volleyball hitter should strengthen his/her arms. That’s why an athlete should do the right type of arm exercises for volleyball including bodyweight exercises, resistance exercises, plyometrics exercises as well as forearms and grip. Doing these exercises is good for volleyball arm swing. If a volleyball hitter does these exercises, then he/she will be able to build power as well as speed and strength in his/her arms.

– An attacker in volleyball shouldn’t use the power of his/her arms only in order hit the ball forcefully towards the target. As a hitter you need to use different parts of your body to create power for a good arm swing.

– Don’t forget to rotate your hips during volleyball arms swing. A good volleyball arm swing requires rotation. If you rotate your hips, you’ll rotate your body and this will allow you to succeed in volleyball arm swing and hit the ball with power.
